It’s the first Wednesday of the regular season, and that of course means our first big slate of dual matches in the 2011-2012 season. There are always some huge opening-week matches and today is no exception. A pair of marquee Class A South matches are on tap for tonight as No. 1 Jackson Memorial visits No. 2 Brick Memorial and No. 5. Toms River South hosts No. 3 Southern. Other than the fact that my top 10 could be exploded by 9 p.m. tonight, I am certainly excited to see what both outcomes are.

No. 1 Jackson Memorial at No. 2 Brick Memorial, 6:30 p.m

Possible matchups

106: Alex Huxford (JM) vs. Sean Millea (BM)

113: Austin Clarke/Hunter Reese (JM) vs. Joe Ghione (BM)

120: Pete Rinaldi (JM) vs. Sean Stephenson (BM)

126: Brian Hamann (JM) vs. Connor Maliff (BM)

132: Brad Royle (JM) vs. Alec Donovan (BM)

138: Spencer Young (JM) vs. Cliff Ruggiero (BM)

145: Dylan McLaughlin (JM) vs. Rob Ruggiero (BM)

152: Randy Royle (JM) vs. Evan Berti/Nick Costa (BM)

160: James Langschultz/Daylan Wellstead (JM) vs. Nick Costa/Tyler Richardson (BM)

170: Dylan Harrington (JM) vs. Tyler Richardson/Jarred Eccles (BM)

182: Dallas Winston (JM) vs. Jarred Eccles/Anthony Miller (BM)

195: Ken Bradley (JM) vs. Anthony Miller (BM)

220: Mike Lopez (JM) vs. Tyler Poling (BM)

Hwt: Corey Johnson (JM) vs. Ezra Figueroa (BM)

Brick Memorial’s loss of junior 195-pounder Matt Moore due to a clavicle injury sustained in the TCNJ Pride Tournament unquestionably makes this matchup much more difficult for the Mustangs. If Jackson wins the coin flip it can get Winston on Miller and really make things difficult for Brick Memorial. Also, I think Ken Bradley is going to open some eyes this year and it wouldn’t surprise me if they let Bradley face Miller. Jackson could also bump Huxford up to 113 to face Ghione. The two split a pair of matches last season. If Randy Royle and Berti end up squaring off it should not only be a tremendous bout, but have serious implications. My guess would be that Eccles weighs in at 182 so there’s at least some flexibility there, but it’s going to be interesting to see what Mustangs head coach Dan O’Cone does from 145-195.

If the matches look roughly like what I have above I have Jackson getting bonus at 106, 126, 132 and 138 and Memorial getting bonus at 113, 120 and 160. With Moore out the Mustangs are going to need to win the coin flip and have some toss-ups go there way. The bouts at 220 and heavyweight are major toss-ups and could certainly swing the match. That being said, I just think Moore being out limits Brick Memorial too much and takes away points you need to have to beat the Jaguars. I also think Brick Memorial’s freshman foursome will be very solid by the end of the year, but have tough matchups this time around. These teams could see each other twice more, but this time I’ll go with Jackson, 34-23.

No. 3 Southern at No. 5 Toms River South, 6:30 p.m.

Possible matchups

106: Matt Wilhelm (S) vs. Brandon Muuray (TRS)

113: Kyle Davis (S) vs. Kevin Corrigan (TRS)

120: Zach Wilhelm (S) vs. Andy Manzano (TRS)

126: Matt Yostpile (S) vs. Matt Theobold (TRS)

132: Brian Bowker (S) vs. Garrett Applegate (TRS)

138: Jake Campana (S) vs. B.J. Clagon (TRS)

145: Chris Serpico (S) vs. Ken Theobold (TRS)

152: Steve Johns (S) vs. Matt Maroukis/Joe Salvato (TRS)

160: Cory Case (S) vs. Antres Clagon (TRS)

170: Connor Case/Steve Hodgson (S) vs. Nick Osborn (TRS)

182: Steve Hodgson/Jesse Bauta vs. Anthony Ravallo/Quenten DeCarlo (TRS)

195: Zeb Collins (S) vs. Mike Rutter (TRS)

220: Cody Smead (S) vs. Marvin Hayden (TRS)

Hwt: Josh Ghigliotty (S) vs. James Kearny (TRS)
Southern is going to need its balance to come through in this one, because Toms River South is stacked in the lowerweights with four heavy hitters than can throw down bonus points in a hurry. There seems to be a fair about of maneuvering both teams can do, especially in the upperweights. From 152 and up is where Southern has the advantage and is going to have to make it count. Down low, the Rams need to win at 106, get bonus from Wilhelm and limit the damage from the Four Horseman (hey, I’m running with it). The Indians inexperience up top worries me, and as we all know crazy things can happen with the big guys. Toms River South is going to have to pull out a toss-up or two with 106 being a key weight along with 152, 170 and 182. This is going to come down to the wire. I’ve been burned before picking against Southern so I’ll go with the higher-ranked Rams. Southern 28-24.

Also, Central and No. 9 Brick tangle in a key Class B South match at 5:30 at Brick.

Jackson Memorial seniors Dallas Winston and Brad Royle each finished among the top eight at the prestigious 19th annual Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament on Sunday at the University of Delaware.

Winston, who is ranked 11th in the nation at 195 pounds by Intermat, wrestled in the 182-pound division and finished fourth. Royle placed fifth at 132 pounds. Winston, who was seeded second, was defeated in the semifinals by third-seeded David Reck of Colonial Forge (Va.), 3-2. In the consolation bracket, Winston defeated No. 5 seed Michael Mocco of Blair Academy before falling to top-seeded Scott Gibbons in the 3rd/4th-place bout. The unseeded Royle had a much tougher road to the medal stand. He lost to No. 2 seed and finalist Randy Cruz of Bethlehem Catholic in the Round of 16 and had to win four straight bouts in the consolation bracket to reach the medal round. He was defeated by Bergen Catholic senior Connor Melde, 4-3, to drop to the 5th/6th-place bout where he won by medical forfeit against sixth-seeded Dennis Gustafson.

Southern Regional also represented the Shore Conference at the Beast of the East, but did not have any medalists. Chris Serpico at 145 and Steve Hodgson at 182 each went 4-2 in the tournament while the Rams tied for 25th as a team among a field of nearly 100 teams.

New Jersey was well-represented at the Beast of the East as the nation’s No. 1 team, Blair Academy, won the team title for the 13th time with a tournament-high five champions. Blair senior Mark Grey, a Cornell recruit, was named Outstanding Wrestler for becoming the first wrestler to win four Beast of the East championships.

Jackson Memorial had the highest finish of any NJSIAA member school, finishing 9th with 92.5 points. Bergen Catholic was 10th, St. Peter’s Prep 12th and Don Bosco Prep 19th.

Don Bosco Prep senior Sal Mastriani won the 152-pound title with a 5-3 decision over Blair Academy’s Russell Parsons. Mastriani, a state medalist from a season ago and a Virginia Tech recruit, was ranked 16th in the nation before the tournament. Bergen Catholic sophomore Johnny Sebastian was second at 160 pounds. The No. 5 seed was leading 4-2 before being taken to his back and pinned by second-seeded Zach Epperly of Christianburg.

Finishing third at 170 pounds was St. Peter’s Prep senior Anthony Pafumi. The No. 4 seed topped 6th-seeded Tyler Rill of Mount St. Joseph 3-1 in the consolation final. His teammate, senior Lenny Richardson, finished fourth at 145.

Other New Jersey medalists included Hanover Park’s Anthony Cefolo (5th at 106) North Bergen’s Anthony Giraldo (4th at 120), Timber Creek’s Ricky Carter (8th at 120), Delbarton’s Nick Anderson (8th at 126), Melde (4th at 132), Delbarton’s Jorge Lopez (5th at 138), Northern Burlington’s Wayne Stinson (8th at 152), Don Bosco Prep’s Razohnn Gross (8th at 195) and Don Bosco Prep freshman Zach Chakonis (5th at 220).

Central Regional standout athlete Kalyph Hardy announced Thursday he will not wrestle during his senior season.

Hardy was a guest on the Barnabas Health Care High School Football Show on 105.7 FM with Kevin Williams, Ed Sarluca and Matt Harmon talking about this past football season. Hardy ran for over 2,000 yards and led the Golden Eagles to a 5-5 record and their first playoff appearance since 2001. He is being recruited by several FCS programs on the east coast

Hardy finished third in New Jersey at 160 pounds last season as a junior, going 39-1, but said his heart was not into wrestling anymore. He concludes his career with 75 wins and was also the 2011 Region VI champ at 160 pounds.

Casaletto chose the South Carolina military school over Division II Newberry College, also in South Carolina, which features such former Shore Conference stars as Jackson Memorial’s Sean Byrnes and B.J. Young, Toms River North’s Brian and Dave Newman and Matt Oliver. The Citadel competes in the Southern Conference as a Division I school and features former St. Benedict’s Prep wrestler Turtogtokh Luvsandorj. The Bulldogs were 8-12 last season, but have been making steady progress under head coach Rob Hjerling.

Casaletto gave his verbal commitment on April 24 and will sign his National Letter of Intent on Friday May 6. Casaletto finished his career with a 123-17 record and is fourth all-time on Southern’s career wins list.

Doug Withstandley, who guided Jackson Memorial to consecutive NJSIAA Group IV wrestling titles in 2010 and 2011, has resigned as the team’s head coach.

As first reported by the Asbury Park Press, Withstandley submitted his letter of resignation on Tuesday, saying “he had accomplished everything he wanted to as a coach”, and “didn’t have the desire he should to be the head coach at Jackson Memorial”.

Withstandley wrestled at Jackson Memorial from 1997-2001 and captured the NJSIAA 140-pound championship his senior year. After wrestling collegiately at Purdue University, he was an assistant for one year under Scott Goodale until taking the reigns of the program when Goodale left to become the head coach at Rutgers University before the 2007-08 season.

During Withstandley’s four-year tenure, the Jaguars amassed an 81-14 record and won a pair of NJSIAA Group IV titles. During Withstandley’s first season, the Jaguars had three individual state champions in Tyler Biscaha (103), Sean Byrnes (145) and Scott Winston (160).

Withstandley, who said he will remain at Jackson Memorial as a physical education teacher, said he was unsure if he would coach again in the future, but stated he would not coach anywhere else besides Jackson Memorial.

Athletic Director John Lamela will no doubt have plenty of resumes to look over as he tries to fill one of the most high-profile head coaching positions in the state.
